Kidney cancer is a rare form of cancer that is typically managed by a urologist. The historical presenting triad of symptoms including flank pain, abdominal mass and visible blood in the urine is more rarely seen in the contemporary setting as the majority of kidney cancers are detected on imaging studies that are ordered for other reasons. Kidney cancer is often detected in its early stages and is typically very treatable/curable. Kidney cancer can be treated by complete removal of the effected kidney, partial removal of the kidney or by selective freezing of the cancer itself (cryotherapy).
