Blood in the urine is a very common reason why patients are referred to a urologist. Blood in the urine can often be seen with the naked eye, but sometimes it is detected on microscopic exam of the urine. There are many things that can cause blood in the urine and Dr. Gibson will work to find the source. The work up for this typically involves imaging of the kidneys and looking directly in the bladder with a small telescope (cystoscopy). Sometimes Dr. Gibson will recommend a biopsy of the bladder depending on what he finds. This is done at the same time of the cystoscopy and typically just takes a couple of minutes.
